The New York Central had requirements of ALCO prior to purchasing the RS-3
series units. The most difficult specification that ALCO had to deal with is that
the NYC required these locomotives be able to work in either passenger service or freight. To meet this, ALCO had a boiler put in the short hood end. There were
only 113 out of the total 1220 RS-3 locos built by ALCO that were equipped with
the boilers. In this book you will see all the details inside and out as well as on
top of the unit and even the boiler under the short hood is shown in detail. The
NYC designated their ALCO RS-3 locomotives as DRSP-6c instead of RS-3's.
