This book shows the details of these locomotives.
With the demise of the NYC, most of the large steam locomotives were
sold for scrap so there is a distinct lack of them still in existence for us to photograph. The one that is the subject of these photos has recently (late 2010)
been undergoing a complete cleaning and cosmetic restoration effort so when complete it will be preserved for even longer. These locomotives were designed
for fast freight service between New York and Chicago over the NYC's
"Water Level Route" and that is where this one spent most of its operational
lifetime. Built in 1929, this unit eventually was surplus to needs and
donated to the National Museum of Transportation in 1963.
