This book shows the details of these super power steam locomotives. They
first showed up in 1942 being built at the N&W's own Roanoke Shops. There
were a welcome appearance at the most difficult of wartime shipping scheduling
to the power strapped N&W. They were built as a compound Mallet with the
front cylinders using the high pressure boiler steam and the rear ones using
the exhaust out of the front set. This was very cost efficient overall and this particular locomotive logged over 1 million miles of service before being retired
from the road in 1959. This book shows the unit all around as well as inside the cab and ALL the details that made them famous in O.Winston Link's photos of the N&W.
