This book shows the details of this class of locomotives that hauled
the Milwaukee Road's varnish through the Cascades on the Lines
West part of the road starting in 1920. These locomotives appear
to be a normal electric locomotive, drawing power from an overhead
catenary but they were special. The powered trucks installed worked
to pull the trains up the hills but when they were descending, they
could be used as generators to put power back into the electric
grid thus reducing the power generation expenses of the road.
These handled the varnish through this part of the road while
the Little Joe's (featured in an upcoming book) hauled the freight.
