The FT A-B-B-A Demonstrator 4 unit set of locomotives traveled the US Railroads
in 1939 racking up huge mileage and tonnage hauled figures the entire time they
were in Demonstration service touring 35 states across 20 Class 1 roads. These locomotives sealed the end of the steam locomotive by being able to have 1 crew control multiple units, what we call today MU-ing. This lowered the employee
expense per train substantially to say nothing of the lowered maintenance
costs associated with diesel locomotives as compared to steamers.

This book shows all around and the details of FT-A #103, the front unit of
the 4 unit lashup. Originally they went out hooked together as a 4 unit set
with drawbars connecting the 4 together. As their demonstration time
ran out, the Southern Railroad bought the set and this locomotive
ended its service on the Southern as their #6100.
