Class 5 Cabooses
(30' long, curved roof, rebuilt Class 1)
Our Quick Pic Book series shows the subjects in extensive black & white photographs which have often been digitally edited to best exhibit the details.

This volume shows all the details on these cars including the trucks & underframe
and due to ongoing question about measurements, in many photos a ruler is present.

These cars were rebuilt from Class 1 Cabooses that were falling apart. Due to the
tax laws of the era, the railroad could keep the metal and replace all the wood
of a car then attach the metal pieces, and it was considered a rebuilt car and
not a new one even though the only thing from the old car may be the metal and fixtures inside. This meant it was considered a lot older than reality and taxed less.

Like the Class 3 cabooses, these 5 cars had the extra room in them and they corrected the one problem with the Class 3 cabs by making the platform wide
enough to be usable and safe. These cars all still exist today around Colorado.
